We would like to thank Foundation Scotland which, through the Wild Salmonid Support Fund, has awarded the West Harris Trust a grant to carry out crucial repairs to the historic Fincastle Dam. This project represents a unique collaboration between the West Harris Trust and Borve Lodge with the aim of preserving both the wild salmon fishery on the Laxdale River, as well as the iconic landscape of Loch Fincastle in the heart of the West Harris coastline. Local anglers are able to fish on the Laxdale river system free of charge. The 160 year old Fincastle Dam separates the fresh water of Loch Fincastle from the marine environment of the Luskentyre Estuary. Wild salmon must progress from the estuary into Loch Fincastle and on up the Laxdale River to their spawning grounds in order to breed. However, the dam is showing signs of its age and is leaking badly, not holding enough water for the salmon to swim through and, so, posing a real ecological threat to this precious ecosystem. The funds awarded are half those needed for the repair, with the other half being provided by Borve Lodge. We are working towards having this project completed next month. We extend our warm thanks also to the West Harris Trust (@Westharristrust ), with whom it is a great pleasure to collaborate on this project which will be of benefit both to Borve Lodge Estate and the local community. For more information see: www.foundationscotland.org.uk/about-us/our-news/habitat-restoration-projects-funded-by-scottish-s...#visitscotland #outerhebrides #isleofharris #flyfishing #salmon #catchandrelease #flyonly ...
